Resources for National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month and Events Around Ohio

From September 15th to October 15th is National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month. It’s a time to celebrate the history, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

September 15th is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and 18, respectively.

We’ve rounded up a sampling of events and resources to give you some ways to celebrate and honor Hispanic and Latino Heritage.

Things to Do

Ohio Hispanic Coalition’s Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off Celebration

The event will include a new Latino mural unveiling, and a youth soccer tournament. The celebration takes place Friday, September 16th.

An inaugural Hispanic Heritage Month Parade will be held in downtown Columbus the morning of Saturday, September 17th. A program following the parade will highlight emerging leaders in the Hispanic community.

The Ohio State University has filled the month with multiple opportunities to celebrate and learn about Hispanic heritage. You can check out the entire list, including a Latin American Music Celebration Concert and a Latinx Buckeye dinner, on their website.

The Columbus Metropolitan Library will hold virtual and in-person programs between September 15th to October 15th. Check this page for a full list of events.

The Columbus Crew is hosting a Hispanic Heritage Celebration on September 18th at 1pm, when the Crew hosts the Portland Timbers at Lower.com Field. There will be a pre-match concert as well as several in-match activities.

Tres Cuentos is a bilingual literary podcast dedicated to Latin America’s narratives.

Latinos Out Loud is a weekly comedic podcast that covers Latinx culture and pop culture.

Frida is a biographical drama that tells the story of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The Oscar-winning film stars Salma Hayek as Kahlo. You can find it on most streaming services.

Netflix gave a re-boot to the 1970s sitcom, One Day at a Time, by focusing on the life of a single mom and her Cuban-American family.
