Exploring Athens: A Guide to Southeast Ohio

Outdoor adventures

Hockhocking Adena Bikeway

A part of Athens’ extensive network of over 25 trails, Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is a fan favorite. The bikeway is shared by cyclists, walkers and runners and spans across 22 miles. Travel to work, school, the market and more using this bikeway. You won’t want to miss out on the self-guided Brewed on the Bikeway tour!

Strouds Run State Park

Located a short drive outside the heart of Athens, Strouds Run State Park is a hidden gem. Enjoy miles of hiking trails, mountain biking and horseback riding, and finish your adventure at Dow Lake. 

Hocking Hills State Park

If you’re willing to travel a bit outside of Athens, Hocking Hills is one of the top destinations in all of Ohio. Explore for just one day or book a rental for a weekend getaway. The park’s highlights include rock climbing, river trips, ATV trails and pontoon boat rentals. 

Wayne National Forest

Visit Ohio’s only national forest, located in our very own southeastern Ohio. Known for its diverse trails, this gorgeous forest is also a place you can bike, horseback ride or ride off-highway vehicles (OHVs). 


Culture and arts

Athens Farmers Market

Want to eat healthy while supporting local businesses? Indulge in fresh produce, local food vendors, handcrafted artisans and more at the Athens Farmers Market. Held every Saturday, 9a.m.-noon year-round and Wednesdays, 9a.m.-noon April-November, this market has something for everyone—literally. For a complete list of vendors, click here.

Ohio Pawpaw Festival

This three-day festival celebrates of one of America’s largest native tree fruits, the pawpaw. Featuring cooking and eating competitions, live music, vendors and more, this festival is an Athens staple you won’t want to miss. Plan your visit around it by checking the dates of this year’s festival

Boogie on the Bricks

Located in the heart of Athens–Court Street–this free event is an annual success. Embrace the community by sharing local art, music and food with the people of Athens. Don’t worry—tourists are more than welcome here (as long as you boogie).

Ohio University

Ranked as the number one college town in Ohio, Athens is home to Ohio University. With over 28 thousand students enrolled, this university is a proud part of the city. Athen’s vibrant Uptown, paired with the historic campus among gorgeous scenery, makes for the perfect college town. 

OhioHealth O’Bleness

OhioHealth O’Bleness is the only major hospital within 45 miles of Athens, making it the go-to place for all Athens residents. Even more, OhioHealth Campus Care is the main health center for Ohio University students. Supporting students is a top priority, with urgent and primary care available to all.
