You Belong Here: How OhioHealth Supports Diverse Women’s Health Needs

At OhioHealth, providing trusted care for women is more than a service — it’s a mission. From navigating pregnancy or menopause to improving wellness, it’s our goal to ensure every woman feels seen, heard and like their health matters at all stages of life.

Every year, we take more steps to expand our services so that we serve all women inclusively and holistically. Learn about key OhioHealth programs and investments we are making to achieve our vision of exceptional and accessible healthcare for women.

Women deserve a health space of their own

OhioHealth’s new Women’s Center, slated to be completed in 2027, is redefining what women’s healthcare looks like. The center is designed to provide comprehensive, integrated care for all stages of women’s lives under one roof.

This 555,000 square-foot inpatient and outpatient facility will house:

  • Primary care
  • Mental health support
  • Obstetric and gynecological services
  • Neonatal intensive care services
  • Fourth trimester clinic
  • Urogynecology and pelvic medicine
  • Women’s heart health services
  • Mammography and more

The education center will also feature classrooms and a teaching kitchen, offering women hands-on opportunities to take charge of their health and wellness journeys. OhioHealth is intentionally co-locating the health and wellness services women commonly need to improve accessibility and coordination of care.

Every detail — from the design process to the construction team — has been thoughtfully shaped by women, with input from patients, the community and care teams to ensure it truly reflects their needs. We’re making it easier for all families to feel comfortable and supported when visiting the center. That means adding things like mobile play carts to help keep young children engaged, and adult changing tables to better support individuals with disabilities or mobility challenges. Our goal is to make healthcare access smoother and ensure everyone feels truly welcome. OhioHealth’s Women’s Center represents the future of healthcare, with a promise to support every aspect of a woman’s healthcare journey.

Reaching women wherever they are

OhioHealth understands that not everyone can travel to meet their care providers, based on challenges like transportation or work barriers. Through mobile care programs and virtual care options, we’re making care more accessible.

Since 2023, OhioHealth has provided mammography services to underserved regions across the state — from Athens to Franklin to Shelby counties. The mobile mammography units offer state-of-the-art technology conveniently at workplaces or community events. Last year alone, the three units provided more than 4,400 mammograms for patients who may not have been able to access mammograms otherwise.

For over 30 years, OhioHealth Wellness on Wheels (WOW) has delivered prenatal, women’s health, and primary care services to patients across central Ohio — regardless of their ability to pay. Last year, WOW’s prenatal care program supported more than 350 patients, leading to over 95 healthy births. Recently, the WOW program expanded to Southeast Ohio, bringing essential services closer to home for the region. To schedule an appointment, call (614) 566-9989.

Specialized care at every life stage

OhioHealth recognizes that women’s bodies and needs evolve throughout their lives — and so should their care. Through specialized clinics and programs, we’re working to ensure women feel supported through every stage.

Pregnancy can feel like a lot — getting ready for your baby, dealing with all the changes in your body and trying to make sense of advice coming at you from family, friends and social media. In 2017, in an effort to create community and support for those navigating their pregnancy, OhioHealth hosted the first cohort of the CenteringPregnancy program. This was a collaboration between OhioHealth Grant Outpatient Care and the Ann Burba Crane Center for Women and Babies at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. In this nationally accredited program, women receive care in a group setting with other expectant mothers, share their experiences and come together in interactive activities to address health topics.

CenteringPregnancy was created to help address concerning infant mortality rates by providing a more supportive environment and community for expectant mothers. In tracking progress of the program over the years, we’ve seen a higher percentage of pregnancies carried to term than the national average, as well as babies born at healthier birth weights and higher rates of breastfeeding upon leaving the hospital. If you’re interested in joining CenteringPregnancy, contact them at (614) 788-5400.

One of the most overlooked aspects of maternal care has been the fourth trimester, or postpartum period. Many women receive minimal follow-up care after childbirth, even though postpartum complications can arise weeks or months later. OhioHealth’s Fourth Trimester Clinic — the first of its kind — supports mothers emotionally and physically after birth, with services ranging from lactation support to mental health support.

Perimenopause and menopause have long been treated as silent struggles, leaving women to manage symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings on their own. The OhioHealth Menopause and Midlife Clinic addresses this gap in care, helping women navigate this stage of life through symptom and hormone management, sexual health support and mental health services.

Support for survivors

Feeling safe in your healthcare journey also means feeling supported at the most vulnerable moments in life. The OhioHealth Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio (SARNCO) provides immediate care to survivors of sexual assault at OhioHealth emergency departments and other local care facilities.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 81% of women in the U.S. reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment or assault in their lifetime — nearly double the amount that men reported experiencing. No one should have to face this alone.

SARNCO offers 24-hour emergency room advocacy, a 24-hour sexual assault helpline, aftercare advocacy, recovery resources and prevention strategies for schools, campuses and businesses. This ensures survivors are cared for with kindness, respect and dignity from the very start and continue to be supported long after the assault occurred.
