Recipe: Guinness Barbecue Sauce

St. Patrick’s Day and Guinness Beer… what could be more Irish?

If you’re looking to do more than drink a draught, how about trying it out in the kitchen, instead?

Here’s a recipe for Guinness Barbecue sauce, courtesy of our McConnell Heart Health Center Chef, that’s sure to spice up your grilled meats.


  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 11.2 oz. Guinness Draught
  • 1 1/2 c dark Brown Sugar (can be replaced with 1 1/2 c Splenda brown sugar)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder


  1. Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Simmer 45 minutes.
  3. Serve right away or cool and save.
