Our bodies aren’t made to sit in chairs, or in front of a computer all day. So it’s important to build healthy habits when it comes to posture and stress relief, and yoga is a perfect way to develop those healthy habits.
Abby Dorn is a yoga instructor at the OhioHealth McConnell Heart Health Center. We sat down with her to talk about the benefits of yoga.
How will incorporating yoga help with everyday stress and strain?
Practicing yoga includes poses to lengthen and stretch the entire body and is an excellent way to help promote relaxation and relieve stress.
Is tension in the neck and shoulders common?
It seems to be a very common problem. Almost everyone in my class requests stretches for shoulders, neck, and low back. It’s hard to let go of tension in those places. That’s where practicing yoga can help because it brings awareness to your posture, you get more familiar with how it feels to be in the correct posture. That’s why we do have to practice yoga because it’s very easy to forget.
What are some other benefits of yoga?
Relaxation and stress relief is the biggest advantage. Yoga also helps create healthy habits with mindfulness of your body and your posture. It also brings a balance to strengthening and stretching your body.
