It might not be possible to make it to a physical starting line this year because of COVID-19, but plenty of races have transitioned to virtual events to make safe participation easy.
So, don’t let all of that hard work and training go to waste! We’ve compiled a list of upcoming races to keep you in stride, along with tips to help you prepare.
Get motivated and set a goal
Finding the motivation to run might be harder than ever. But signing up for a virtual race could be the first step, giving you something to strive for. Whether you’re looking to set a personal record or you are running your first race, it’s important have a plan and a SMART goal in mind. Make sure your goal is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely.
Hold yourself accountable
If your usual running group is no longer meeting up, you’ll need to find other ways to stay accountable. You can find online groups providing motivation and community during this time, including Fleet Feet’s #RunningIsNOTCancelled group.
Tell your friends and family exactly when and where you’ll be running. Not only can they help to hold you accountable, but they can come out on race day and cheer you on.
Train, train, train!
It’s just as important to train properly for a virtual race as it is for any other. Plan in advance so you have plenty of time to adjust to longer mileage. Check out OhioHealth’s training schedules to find one that fits your goal.
Plan your route
You’re in charge of your own race, so you’ll need to plan your route ahead of time. An out and back course? A Loop? You decide what’s best for you. Also think about hydration stations you may need along the way. Consider asking a family member to follow along your route with water and gels.
Safety should always come first, and there’s a lot more to think about nowadays. Plan to run during times when trails are less crowded so you can properly social distance. Or find trails that are less traveled. On your race day, have an emergency contact ready in case you need help.
