How Seasonal Self Care Can Boost Your Mood: Tips for Every Time of Year

As the seasons change, so do your needs.

Adjusting your self-care routine to the current season can help you make the most of it. We’re here to help you build a self-care toolkit that’s full of unique practices catered to each season. Remember, your self-care routine shouldn’t look the same in July as in January.

If you notice a shift in your mood, energy or sleep when the seasons change, you’re not alone. The changing seasons bring changes in routines and stability, sometimes inducing depressive or anxious states, like seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which may require medication or help from a healthcare provider. Thankfully, many of these seasonal shifts can be managed by prioritizing self-care and sticking to a plan. Here’s how to make the best self-care toolkit for the changing seasons:

Find your foundation

There are five core foundations for building a self-care toolkit you can use year-round: sleep, nutrition, movement, connection and mindfulness. Each is an important self-care tactic that should be prioritized year-round.

Sleep:

  • Sleep is time for the mind to restore, repair and rejuvenate. Not only does sleep rest your body, but resting your mind can be vital for navigating seasonal changes.

Nutrition:

  • Nutrition is an ever-changing journey, making it an important self-care factor. Nutrition is a key factor in your physical health, and prioritizing a balanced diet increases energy, stabilizes mood and prevents disease.

Movement:

  • Exercise is crucial for a balanced lifestyle. The CDC recommendsjust 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day for adults to help with overall well-being.

Connection:

  • You don’t have to be social every single day, but connecting with others is a vital way to boost morale. Building connections with others will help you find purpose and passion in daily life.

Mindfulness:

  • Practicing mindfulness helps foster your growth and success. It’s important to find time to reflect, relax and be intentional with your self-care.

Whether you stick with these foundations or find your own, determining your self-care non-negotiables is a great first step.

Choose your season

The changing seasons allow for the progression of self-care. You can change your toolkit with each season, adjusting your goals and tactics every few months.

Summer: Prioritize energy and excitement during the summer season.

  • Stay hydrated by making a drinking plan. If you’re exceptionally active or sweat a lot, you might consider adding additional electrolytes for extra hydration.
  • Focus on protecting your skin from the sun. Refresh yourself on which sunscreen is best for you.
  • Get outside! Spend time doing your favorite outdoor activities, or try something new for a change of pace.

Fall: Prioritize well-being and balance during the fall.

Winter: Prioritize rest and restoration during the winter season.

  • Create a space dedicated to self-care. Cozy up with blankets, candles or other items that bring peace.
  • Care for your skin. The winter weather can be harsh, so it’s important to find a skin-care routine that works for you
  • Make time to reflect. The new year brings the opportunity to reflect on the past year and plan for the year ahead.

Spring: Prioritize growth and renewal in the spring.

  • Refresh routines. Spring brings the opportunity to reset and refresh your daily routines.
  • Prepare for the sunshine and warm weather. A spring clean is always a good way to reset your space and mind.
  • Move your body. Enjoy the newfound sun, get outside and make time for movement every day.

Build Your Toolkit

Now that you’ve done all the hard work, here’s the fun part—building your toolkit. After reflecting on what your needs and goals are for the season, take action. Everyone’s toolkits are going to look different, so it’s important to find the tools that help you succeed in your self-care foundations. Whether it’s journaling, listening to music, taking time for yourself or spending time with loved ones, your tools should be personalized and won’t always work for everyone else.

Ask yourself questions like “What recharges me?” or “What fuels me?” to find the tools that work best for you. You can also keep a list in a journal or on your phone to remind you of your tools throughout the year. Don’t forget that your self-care tools may change, and they don’t have to stay the same throughout the year.

You’ll likely need to adjust your toolkit with the seasons, so take time to reflect on your priorities and foundations as the seasons change. Remember, self-care is about finding the tools that help you grow, no matter the time or place.

Practice consistency

Once all is said and done, your toolkit is your key to living your best life through every season. Throughout the year, make time to check in on your goals. Are the tools in your toolkit helping fuel you towards these goals?  Mark a date on your calendar or set a reminder on your phone to check your toolkit and decide what’s working and what’s not. No matter the season, self-care is important.

Self-care is the foundation of your success. Your needs may change with the seasons, but you’ll be prepared for whatever the year brings with your very own self-care toolkit.
