Joe Gastaldo, MD, System Medical Director for Infectious Diseases explains why there is a new vaccine timeline for second doses and who should wait longer for a second dose.
Recently, the CDC revised their second dose time period recommendation for mRNA vaccines. Based on information specifically out of Canada, and other parts of the world, giving the second dose at a longer interval decreases the risk of vaccine associated myocarditis.
That is specifically applicable to people below the age of 30, especially men.
As a clinician, Dr. Gastaldo would recommend men below the age of 30 getting the second dose of an mRNA vaccine to consider waiting up to eight weeks. Otherwise, for adults, the second dose administration can remain at three to four weeks.
