How Much Immunity Do You Have Post COVID?

Since the beginning of the pandemic, people have been talking about immunity you get from having COVID. Joe Gastaldo, MD System Medical Director for Infectious Diseases, explains what we know about post-COVID immunity and if it’s safe to get vaccinated after an infection.

After getting COVID, people get a degree of immunity. However, the level of immunity a person gets is not easily quantifiable.

The degree of immunity a person gets is based on their age and severity of illness. People who are older do not respond as well to immunity from infections or vaccines. With COVID-19, you get more immunity with a higher severity of illness.

Something we know for sure is that it is safe to vaccinate people who have had COVID-19. More importantly, the type of immunity a person gets after having COVID and then getting vaccinated is the most durable and robust type of immunity.
