How Sick Will You Get With The Omicron Variant?

There are many questions surrounding the severity of illness with the Omicron variant. In this Fast Fact, Joe Gastaldo, MD, OhioHealth System Medical Director for Infectious Diseases, discusses what we know so far here.

Is Omicron associated with a higher severity of illness? The answer to that is not yet clear.

Based on information coming out of South Africa, it appears that Omicron may be associated with a lower severity of illness. However, it is important to remember that Omicron essentially hit South Africa right after a severe Delta surge.

Based on information coming out of the United Kingdom, the Omicron variant is not associated with a lower severity of illness. In fact, Imperial College of London highly suggest on their data that Omicron is not less severe compared to any other variant.

We are still waiting and looking for information specifically coming out of the United States on whether or not Omicron is associated with a higher severity of illness.
