How do we know the COVID-19 vaccine is safe? Joe Gastaldo, MD, System Medical Director of Infectious Diseases at OhioHealth addresses this topic in our myth-busting fast fact.
Dr. Gastaldo tells us, “there are three safe and effective vaccines. The COVID vaccines were produced, clinical trials were conducted, and final products were reviewed by three independent review boards in the exact same manner as previous vaccine studies.” The COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials had more volunteers compared to previous vaccine clinical trials.
This article was published in September 2021. Since the initial release in December 2020, in the United States alone, we have administered more than 360 million doses of the vaccines.
Unlike any previous vaccines, safety mechanisms were set up to ascertain any type of adverse reactions. Three rare reactions were identified, but looking at them all, the benefit of getting vaccinated far outweighs any risk.
